Four Ways to Improve the Security of Your Home
Posted Tuesday, June 17, 2014
These days you cannot afford to overlook the issue of security, with the current statistics concerning burglary, robbery and crime in general. Reduce the risk of break-ins and increase the security at your home by implementing these four steps:
1. Keep the exterior of your home well-maintained.
Thieves are looking for an easy target. If your property looks neglected or uninhabited, burglars take notice. A front door that’s hidden by trees or shrubs provides crooks the perfect cover they need while breaking in. To improve security, maintain the exterior of your property. Hire someone or enlist a neighbor to take care of it in your absence.
2. Install outdoor motion sensor lights.
This is one of the best low-cost ways to keep intruders away from your home. Position motion sensor lights so that they cover all entrances into your home (front, back and sides). It is harder for a thief to break in if there are lights placed at the entry points to your home. Other places to point motion sensor lights are at your gates, the darker areas of your yard and around trees and bushes.
3. Lock your doors and windows.
I know this one seems obvious, but many people forget to take this basic step. Keep your doors and windows locked and your garage door closed, even when you’re home.
4. Get a dog.
A barking dog can serve as a warning and attract attention, something burglars try to avoid. In addition to increasing security, a dog reduces your stress and gives you unconditional love. What more can you ask?
