5 House Moving Tips to Minimize Stress

    Posted Friday, April 23, 2021

The excitement of house moving and starting fresh in a new home is often overshadowed by the impending stress of managing the move. For many of us, our home is the center of our universe - a place to relax, build a family, and truly be ourselves. It’s no wonder that uprooting and moving houses is one of the most stressful things that someone can experience. Fortunately, there are ways to make the house moving process more seamless, so you can focus on the excitement of starting fresh in a new space. Take a look at these five great moving tips for managing your stress levels from the experts at The Sharon Falco Group.

    1. Clean and Organize Your Home

Moving houses will be exponentially less stressful if you take the time to do some prep work in the upcoming weeks or months before the big day. Starting the organization process earlier than you planned will eliminate the ‘too much to do in so little time’ adage that is often associated with moving into a new house. At least a few weeks before the big day, go room by room in your current home and organize your items so that you aren’t surprised by anything closer to the move. This will also allow you to plan for how many boxes and trucks you’ll need. Don’t be afraid to purge the clutter, either! You may be surprised by how much easier your move is after throwing away some older items in your home that have been collecting dust.

    2. Pack an Overnight Bag

Once everything is packed up and ready to move to your new home, you may have trouble finding the things you use on a day-to-day basis. It’s common to be so focused on packing and organizing everything that you do just that- pack EVERYTHING. You should always pack an ‘overnight bag’ or a bag of essentials that includes things like soap, dental care items, toilet paper, and phone chargers. Including medications, snacks, and a first aid kit is also great practice. The last thing you don’t want to experience mid-move is a bout of frustration because your essential items are buried deep in one of your moving boxes.

    3. Create Checklists to Track Your Boxes, Expenses, and Tasks

To stay organized moving into a new house, make a list of all the tasks that need to be completed and divide them into days and weeks. It will benefit you to create an organization system for your boxes as well, which could be as simple as numbering or color-coding them based on their respective rooms. To stay within your budget, make sure you’re keeping track of all the moving expenses you’ve incurred. Even small costs like packing tape add up quickly.

    4. Accept That Stress is a Normal Part of Moving Into a New House

Accepting that moving into a new house is objectively one of the most stressful experiences that one can go through will help you to navigate through any feelings of overwhelm that may arise. Expect the unexpected, as things may happen that could throw a figurative wrench into your house moving plans.

    5. Treat Yourself!

Reward yourself for all your hard work - you certainly deserve it. Treat yourself to a nice dinner or pop a celebratory bottle of champagne after a long day of packing. Channel the feelings of excitement and positivity you have around starting fresh in a beautiful new space. Most importantly, know when to stop and take a break. Don’t let yourself start to spiral if you feel the house moving stress. Create a safe space in the midst of the moving chaos to step away to if you start to feel overwhelmed.
